The Protected area service of Metropolitan City of Rome has conducted serveral researches aimed at verifying which and how many bat taxa regularly or only for wintering in the largest known natural underground cavities of Mount Soratte, while simultaneously monitoring the respective access points from the point of view of the protection of these threatened mammals and the safety of the public visiting the protected area.

Research aimed at verifying which and how many bat taxa regularly or only for wintering in the largest known natural underground cavities of Mount Soratte, while simultaneously monitoring the respective access points from the point of view of the protection of these threatened mammals and the safety of the public visiting the protected area. Among the main results, the confirmation of the frequentation within the 10 studied cavities of 11 species/taxa of Chiroptera: with three rhinolophids: Rhinolophus ferrumequinum, R. hipposideros, R. euryale, six vespertilionids: Pipistrellus pipistrellus, P. kuhlii, Hypsugo savii, Eptesicus serotinus, two different Myotis n.d., one miniopterus: Miniopterus schreibersii and 1 molosser: Tadarida teniotis.
Therefore, it is very important to organize events to disseminate and raise awareness among citizens on the importance of knowing and understanding the need to safeguard bats.
A Bat Night is planned to be held in the last week of August 2025.
