Every summer, hundreds of thousands of Brazilian free-tailed bats roost in the lava tube caves of El Malpais National Monument. Park rangers will guide visitors to the most accessible of these large bat colonies at the El Calderon Area as bats pour out of Bat Cave for their nightly feeding frenzy. Visitors will learn about the life history of bats, their ecological significance, their adaptive strategies, and what makes this region home to them.
