Jersey Bat Group Bat Walk - Queen's Valley Reservoir

Type of event:
Bat Walks & Observation
Event presence:
In person

The Jersey Bat Group is holding a series of bat walks this weekend to celebrate the 20th International Bat Night.

European Bat Night was started to celebrate bats and raise awareness about the diversity of species, the life styles they lead and of the issues facing bat populations across Europe. This has since grown into International Bat Night which is supported by organisations across the world which run events to showcase local bats and encourage everyone to get involved in bat conservation.

The Jersey Bat Group will be getting involved by running two bat walks over the coming weekend:

• Saturday 27th August – Val de la Mare Reservoir (meeting in the main car park off La Grande Route de St Pierre between 19.00-19.30);

• Sunday 28th August – Queens Valley Reservoir (meeting in the northern car park off La Rue D’Aval).

At both walks members of the Jersey Bat Group will let you in on the secret world of bats as you are led on a short walk around the reservoirs watching bats flying and hunting in their natural environment and even getting the chance to use a bat detector to listen in on their ultra high frequency calls! You will discover what bats eat, where they roost, how they find their way around in the dark and simple ways that you can help bats in Jersey.

Both events are free of charge and all are welcome. Children under the age of 16 must be accompanied by an adult. The walks will last around an hour (although you are free to stay longer if you wish). At Val de la Mare the route is flat and very easy, at Queens Valley it is easy but there are a couple of gentle slopes. Please wear appropriate shoes and clothing, and bring a torch if you have one. Importantly there will be hot chocolate and cake provided at the end!
