The Newsletter of the Agreement on the Conservation of Populations of European Bats

Eurobat Chat

No. 12 / October 2007

Dear readers of the Eurobat Chat, dear colleagues and friends,

It has been quite a while since we have been able to present you a new issue of our newsletter. This was mainly due to staff and budgetary constraints. However, it was never our intention to give up this useful information tool. More modern techniques have eventually reached the Secretariat and we are happy to present you today our new electronic format of the Eurobat Chat that will allow us to share recent developments more regularly and efficiently in the future. Very special thanks go to our intern Elise Kopper who has developed it during the past weeks of her presence in the Secretariat.

And it is a good moment for Eurobat Chat No. 12, informing you about our latest activities including the imminent launch of the new volume of the EUROBATS Publication Series with guidelines for the management of important underground sites for bats and also some staff news.

The picture on the left shows the new UN Campus in Bonn, which was inaugurated by Kofi Annan on
11 July 2006. The EUROBATS Secretariat is located on the 10th floor and has a beautiful view on the river Rhine and the City of Bonn. Please also note our new address:

Your kind assistance is needed for the distribution of the electronic Eurobat Chat as we do not have the e-mail addresses of many former subscribers of the printed version. We therefore kindly request you to forward this issue to whoever you believe might be interested and to encourage for subscription at chat@eurobats.org.

And now we hope you will enjoy reading Eurobat Chat No. 12,

With kind regards,

Andreas Streit

Executive Secretary

Stop Press: Unexpected visit of a living Pipistrelle for launch of Eurobat Chat No. 12

A tired uninjured Pipistrelle was brought to the EUROBATS Secretariat today (see picture). A Bonn citizen had found it sitting on the ground and apparently too weak to find a daytime shelter. It will now find a provisional new home at the house of Christine and Peter Boye until it will have recovered. The EUROBATS Team took this unexpected visit as a good omen for the Eurobat Chat.
