Since 1997 every year around the last weekend in August volunteer and professional bat workers have been called upon to invite the public to learn about bats, their biology, threats and conservation needs. All over Europe hundreds of people can participate in bat events like indoors or open air talks with sound samples or stuffed specimens, power-point presentations, 3D slide shows and bat walks with ultrasound detectors at evening time. In some places the event starts in the afternoon and the time is filled with a children specific programme dealing with bat painting and handicrafts, bat games, bat musicals, bat cakes or biscuits and much else besides. |
|
In the meantime in around 30 European states events for public awareness within the European Bat Night are arranged. The EUROBATS Secretariat sends the posters free of charge to persons and organisations to announce their Bat Night events. This year 4,100 posters were shipped - so if only one person per poster participated, 4,100 Europeans were out for a Bat Night this year! Even countries that are not members of the Agreement host a yearly Bat Night. Therefore we are really proud of all bat enthusiasts who pick up the idea of the European Bat Night and share their fascination for bats with other people. The Secretariat says THANK YOU! Last but not least we encourage you to continue to increase public awareness of bats and their needs - you can count on the Secretariat to support this intent. On our website you can find information about forthcoming events and reports of previous activities (http://www.eurobats.org/news_events/european_bat_night.htm). Please be so kind as to send reports of this year’s events to the Secretariat to be put on the website.
