The Ninth European Bat Night in Bulgaria took place in the
region of the Protected area "Brashljan-Kalimok",
a wetland along Danube river. It was organised by the NGO
Bat Research and Protection Group, the National Museum of
Natural History and the Museum of History in Tutrakan. The
topic was Bats & Wetlands aiming to stress the importance
of the wetlands as bat habitats.
That is why a new leaflet ("Bats and Wetlands")
about the role of the wetlands in the bat life was designed,
printed and distributed.
Main events took part on September 27th in the old town
of Tutrakan. An exhibition "About bats" was open
in the Museum of History. It consists of about 50 colorful
photos of bats and their habitats in Bulgaria, posters about
bat conservation from all over Europe and a number of children
drawings. Later in the afternoon there was a multimedia
presentation and the real night event was a bat detector
walk along the riparian forest near Danube river.
The whole week the team of BRPG was traveling in the area
and performing a presentation about bats and bat protection
in many local schools. More then 600 students and teachers
have had the chance to learn about bats. All the time the
regional media broadly announced the events.
On 10th of October the Bat Night took part also in the area
of the Nature Park Vrachanski Balkan in the town of Vratza.
There was a competition for children drawings on the asphalt.
The 9EBN was supported by the GEF Project Wetlands Restoration
