Closely related to P kuhlii, P. madeirensis is a small pipistrelle bat with very dark brown fur and dark muzzle, ears and membranes.

The species can be found in both woodland and urban habitats. In summer the Madeiran pipistrelle roosts in building crevices, while in winter rocks, bridges and ruins are chosen. Although it hibernates, this species can remain active throughout the year if the weather conditions are suitable.

P. madeirensis is able to hunt beetles and moths both around street lamps, over water and open fields. It is a sedentary species.

IUCN status:
Endangered

Decreasing according to the IUCN Redlist.

Geographic Range:

This species is restricted to Madeira (Madeira, Porto Santo), and the western Canary Islands (La Palma, La Gomera, El Hierro, Tenerife).

Threats:

The use of agricultural pesticides may be a problem, and disturbance to roosts in buildings may also be a source of concern.
